Homeowners seeking inspiration for using tile in their kitchen or bath can now find hundreds of ideas on Tile Ideas, a multimedia CD-ROM.
Developed by Bassworks Multimedia, the CD includes more than 400 photographs of tile installations, 350 tile patterns and simple-to-use interactive design tools. “Homeowners are able to look through vast galleries of tile installations and tile patterns to find something that sparks their creative juices – far more than is possible in a printed book. If they see something they like, they can print out the page in color,” notes Bassworks president James Bass.
Interactive tools allow users to create unique patterns based on an 8 x 8 grid. “It beats bringing back tile samples from the tile store and laying them out on the floor, or fiddling with pencil and paper,” adds Bass.
The image galleries show examples of professional tile installations in kitchens, baths, living and dining rooms, as well as fireplaces and murals, to inspire decorating ideas. The disc also features a pattern designer, enabling the user to construct a pattern by clicking squares in a grid, then viewing various iterations of the design.
“Tile decorating is an art form that can create any personality in a room,” says Bass. “Tile Ideas helps users visualize that personality and create it on-screen as a map to the finished product.”
The Tile Ideas CD-ROM also includes a grout “explorer” that shows how commercially available grout colors look with different color tiles and different grout widths.
“Grout color is often overlooked until the end of a tile job, but grout can be a design element in its own right,” says Bass. “For example, combining white tiles with colored grout will bring the focus of attention to the grout. Being able to try variations on the computer opens a world of new possibilities.”
A bonus six-minute video documentary shows the making of a beautifully constructed artisan tile by Dodge Lane Potter’s group, a tile studio located in Sonora California.
The Tile Ideas CD-ROM is available online at www.TileIdeas.com for $19.99. It plays on most Windows and Mac computers. Details are available at the website.
Bassworks Multimedia was founded in 1994. The company creates multimedia for consumer and corporate applications.
